1530s, \"to demand, to claim,\" from Latin expostulatus, past participle of expostulare \"to demand urgently, remonstrate, find fault, dispute, complain of, demand the reason (for someone\'s conduct),\" from ex- \"from\" (see ex-) + postulare \"to demand\" (see postulate (v.)).
