Old English hedan \"to heed, observe; to take care, attend,\" from West Germanic *hodjan (cognates: Old Saxon hodian, Old Frisian hoda, Middle Dutch and Dutch hoeden, Old High German huotan, German hüten \"to guard, watch\"), from PIE *kadh- \"to shelter, cover\" (see hat).
