其含义与be afraid (of/to- v )基本相同,但fear常用作书面语,而be afraid (of/to- v )为日常用语。

I am afraid, we are afraid。

        fear, alarm, dread, terror

She has a dread of losing her property.

They live in the dread of forest fire.

He gave the alarm when the thief appeared.

Their eyes were wide with alarm when the burning building collapsed.

They suffered untold terrors in the dark.

        fear, afraid

be afraid of=fear, be afraid of v -ing = fear to- v 。例如:

There is nothing to fear〔to be afraid of〕.

I fear offending him.〔I am afraid of offending him.〕我怕得罪他。

We are not afraid of difficulties.〔We fear no difficulty.〕

        2.在非正式场合, be afraid (of)比fear常用得多。例如:

Are you afraid of the dark?

Do you fear the dark?

I suddenly felt fear.

        正 I suddenly felt afraid.

I'm fearing that she won't be able to come on time.

正 I fear that she won't be able to come on time.
